A laboratory of change in Rhodes

Supported By: Tui Colab

The largest island in the Dodecanese, where natural abundant beauty, buzzing, cosmopolitan towns, medieval buildings and traditional Greek charm align to create an all-round excellent island for travellers to hang their sunhat, Rhodes is carving out a new future for sustainable tourism in collaboration with TUI, to launch “The Rhodes Co-Lab”.

Not just any laboratory, the new Co-Lab is the first project of its kind in the world, created to explore how a tourism destination can develop sustainability, both in terms of preserving the environment but also socially and economically, creating jobs and involving the local community.

Part of the Co-Lab includes a think tank of international experts putting their heads together to find the best ways to transform the tourism sector from a sustainability perspective.

The island’s ecological footprint is set to be dramatically reduced through new energy, water and waste management initiatives, whilst new education and training opportunities will ensure local people are onboard.

A green guinea pig for the world, Rhodes is setting out to be a role model and blueprint for other destinations, demonstrating that places can reap the economic benefits of tourism, whilst preserving the environment, biodiversity and local culture.

Rhodes is the ideal destination to test innovations for sustainable tourism – a hugely popular holiday destination with an array of complex tourism challenges – but most importantly a place willing to commit to a new sustainable future and put the past behind it.
