Find out what the buzz is all about in Galaxidi
Hey, honey! Have you heard about one of central Greece’s most picturesque towns, Galaxidi? Located on the south coast, this fishing town was only accessible from the sea until 1963 and so it developed in relative isolation, giving it the feel of a remote Greek island.
Once home to some of Greece’s most important shipping families, Galaxidi’s cobbled streets are lined with grand Neoclassical mansions, as well as historical maritime and religious landmarks. Sample fresh seafood and traditional fare in one of the authentic restaurants along the waterfront, and look out for local ingredients made by sustainable methods, such as local honey.
Nearby in Itea you can visit a local beekeeper to experience traditional Greek honey production, which is naturally sustainable, and meet the busy bees. Don a protective suit to head out into the garden and view the hives, before finding out what the buzz is all about when it comes to the importance of bees for our planet – you might even get to hold one of the honeycomb frames and observe the bees up close.
Back in Galaxidi, take advantage of the natural sugar rush to wander down little streets lined with painted houses sporting bright blue and green shutters. Take a walking tour to find out more about the town’s fortunate position on 18th-century maritime trade routes, and what led to Galaxidi’s heyday in the 19th century, and see some sweet sights along the way.
