Finding incommon ground in Petralona, Athens

Where would we be without our morning cup of coffee?
Asleep, probably.
Incommon wants the world to wake up and create a place where coffee grounds are not just giving you a shot of energy, they are also helping to fuel an entire kindergarten.
Taking the concept of a circular economy, incommon has imagined a world where coffee becomes energy, old clothes become new toys, and food waste is turned into neighbourhood flower beds!
Incommon’s ‘burning’ project means that for every ton of coffee dregs they utilise, 4.5 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent is saved from landfill. In collaboration with local coffee shops across Greece, incommon collects the used grounds and turns them into natural compost to help manage organic waste properly and save resources.
Showing that the circular economy is not just about recycling, incommon works with sustainable housing initiatives and neighbourhood campaigns such as the Circular Petralona project. Lined with buzzing cafes and quaint tavernas, the neighbourhood of Petralona encapsulates old Athens, with neoclassical buildings and a historic feel, while also having a vibrant contemporary vibe thanks to innovative restaurants and interesting shops.
Designed to improve the social and environmental quality of life of those who live, work and operate in (or visit) this central urban area of the capital, the Circular Petralona project covers everything from clothing swaps to teaching kids how to create new toys from recycled items.
With a broad range of initiatives for locals and visitors alike, incommon wants us all to wake up and smell the coffee when it comes to the benefits of the circular economy. Visit Incommon to learn more about the projects.
