Hold your anchor off Andros

Supported By: Cyclades Reservation Fund

The mountainous, marvellous island of Andros stands out from its Cycladic counterparts for its green, lush landscape. But what isn’t so obvious, is that its greenness extends off the rocky shores, and out under the sea where divers will find underwater meadows of swaying sea grass.

The Posidonia Meadows are endemic to the Med and really pack a punch when it comes to sustainability – they create sand for the beaches, filter the seawater, limit coastal erosion, host marine life and absorb huge amounts of carbon (15 times more CO2 than a similar size plot in the Amazon) – go Posidonia!

However, it’s not all sunshine and roses. The meadows are frequently damaged by yachts dropping anchor. As the anchors hit the seafloor and drag, the seagrass is wiped out. Not cool.

Cyclades Posidonia Alert is coming to the rescue, an Andros initiative from the Cyclades Preservation Fund and the Hellenic Center for Marine Research, to raise awareness around the super seagrass and its importance, educate yacht owners and companies, and thus encourage responsible yacht anchoring throughout the Cyclades. Anchors away! (literally)
