Lighting up Lipsi
Supported By: Lipsi
In the northern part of the Dodecanese, nestled between rocky reefs and tiny deserted islands, travellers will find the small island of Lipsi, a bee-mark for sailors and holidaymakers looking to get off-grid.
The magnificently rugged island is encouraging visitors to have an authentic and sustainable experience, by eliminating all sunbeds and single-use plastics and urging them to abstain from technology. Why have sunbeds when there’s smooth natural rock to lay down on, and why have swimming pools when you have the wide, warm sea?
Another move to become more sustainable, sunny Lipsi is lighting up the island when the sun goes down using Signify solar luminaires. 28 new self-sufficient solar lights have been installed in areas that previously lacked full electricity coverage, including the island’s playground. The Philips SunStay solar luminaries seamlessly blend with the island’s natural landscape and include everything they need to produce light which means they can be placed off the electrical grid. The innovative lights have motion sensors which increase the light level as people or cars approach, and dim to 30% when no one is around to reduce energy consumption and increase battery life.
And finally, don’t forget comfortable shoes. The island’s small size at just 8km long, means there is no need for cars and it’s best explored on foot. An absolute haven to step up, switch off and slow down.
