Minoan Energy Community dreams and fights for a fair energy transition in Crete

Supported By: Crete

In the small and unknown town of Arkalochori, in October 2019, 38 visionaries founded the Minoan Energy Community, which today counts more than 600 members, among which three Municipalities and the Regional Authority of Crete, and features as the largest energy community in Greece. The vision of Minoan Energy Community is to convert the energy transition in Crete to the pylon for a fair and rational social and economic development for all Cretans, through the implementation of all energy transition projects from them and for them. With two photovoltaic parks already constructed, of 1.4 MW nominal power in total, roughly 300 members of the Community are supplied with free electricity, among which 100 low-income, earthquake victim families.

A cluster of energy transition projects (wind parks, pumped storage, district heating with biomass, smart grid, hydrogen plants and new photovoltaics) have been designed and take their implementation turn one by one, together with a wide capacity building campaign, dedicated to raise awareness on energy transition of the whole insular community. With vision, integrity, high-level technical and economic expertise and faith on a fair and sustainable energy future in all sectors and facilities (agriculture, tourism, commerce, industry and residential), Minoan Energy Community aims to convert Crete to the first green and truly energy independent and democratic island in Greece.
