Sand, sea and solar power on Halki
Supported By: Halki
Greece’s islands are going green. One of the first in line is the small island of Halki in the Dodecanese archipelago, where a green energy community project is underway to ensure all energy generated on the small, colourful island is renewable.
A solar farm, electric vehicles and a new solar powered boat are contributing to the goal, which is part of the Gr-Eco Island Initiative to transform energy generation across Greece’s islands, and ultimately the whole country.
The island, adorned by pastel fronted houses, red rooftops and shimmering swimming spots, just 6km west of Rhodes has introduced a solar-powered boat meaning visitors can take eco-friendly excursions around the island, their only footprint left behind being those on the sandy beach.
Not only will the project reduce environmental impact but will also provide residents with lower electricity bills and an upgraded telecommunications infrastructure including 5G networks.
Halki is one of the first islands undergoing the energy transition, and a crucial step in the country’s shift from carbon-based power to renewable energy sources. Hooray for Halki!
