Sifnos: Lights, camera, take action!
Supported By: Sifnos
The birthplace of Greece’s first celebrity chef, Sifnos is rightly celebrated for its stupendous cuisine, conjured up from the island’s bountiful natural produce – a land of plump chickpeas, wild capers, laden almond trees and waters brimming with fish. These local staples are best enjoyed in a friendly local tavern as the waves lap against the shore and the smell of sizzling mackerel fills the balmy air.
And now the wild, gastronomic Cycladic Island is taking a clever approach in protecting the precious land and sea which produces this amazing bounty, by motivating its residents to engage in environmental issues, with a series of film screenings. Each flick relates to a local eco-issue and is followed by a discussion to thrash out the best course of action.
A local champion is on hand to research the link between the film and Sifnos, coordinate a lively conversation and inspire locals to come up with ideas based on the topics and take action. The top-notch ideas will be evaluated and rewarded by the Cyclades Preservation Fund.
By shedding light on local issues through film, locals will be stirred up and motivated to make change. And it doesn’t stop there, additional screenings will take place across other islands in the Cyclades, including Kimolos. Roving open-air cinema “Cine Kalisperitis” has been equipped with small lanterns that are charged by the sun – a donation by the Cyclades Preservation Fund to reduce the cinema’s environmental footprint – creating a truly unique atmosphere for a movie evening on picturesque Kimolos. Pass the popcorn!
