Syros’ new natural playground
Supported By: Syros
Syros is home to ice-cream hued buildings, palm tree-fringed marble squares and whitewashed churches crowned with deep blue domes, peppering the tree-lined hillsides. A place where a profound history and culture marries with a breezy laid-back vibe. Head to the north and it gets wonderfully wild. There travellers will find Apano Meria, a rugged mountainous utopia where farmhouses perch on ancient hillside terraces and the heady scents of fennel, thyme and wild olives fill the highland air.
Included in the Natura 2000 network, the area is of great natural, geological and archaeological significance, filled with ancient sites and settlements, and the sparkling blue mineral glaucophane.
So far, few travellers have ventured to this ethereal land, but soon it’ll be accessible to hikers and tranquillity-seekers with the creation of the “Apano Meria Geopark”. The social enterprise will map out, clean up and protect three historical footpaths which weave through the mythical hills leading to sites of geological and historical significance. The map will form a crucial foundation for the area to become a certified UNESCO Geopark.
Adding a whole new tourism string to Syros’ bow, whilst at the same time protecting and managing a significant natural land – Syros you rock!
