Tap into the ancient energy of olives in Olympia

Do you need an energy boost? Olives have thrived on Ancient Olympia, the site of the first Olympic Games held in 776 BC, and have been cultivated here for more than 1,000 years. A sign of peace and prosperity, the succulent small fruits are an iconic part of Greek culture and the key ingredient in extra virgin olive oil, which is an essential part of the gastronomic heritage and contemporary cuisine of the culture.
Visitors can wander the tree-shaded ruins of the Olympia archaeological site and transport yourself back in time to the origin of the Olympic games at this UNESCO listed site, which gives a taste of the ancient history of the area and the original Olympics in the very place that gave it the name.
In this ancient place where more than 70 temples can be found, you’ll also find a new “temple”, which is devoted to the sacred olive tree. It’s been created by the Karambelas family, who are fourth-generation olive growers that cultivate more than 4,500 family-owned olive trees on their olive and wine farm on the slopes of Olympia. By using sustainable farming methods and traditional techniques they have been able to switch to an organic process to create world-class olive oil.
Enter The Olive Temple to discover the best local extra virgin olive oil products, and then take a guided tour of the family’s extensive groves to learn about organic farming. Visit the hand-built olive mill to see traditional techniques in practice, before tucking into a dinner featuring fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Bring your dancing shoes because after a Greek dinner, there must be Greek dancing, and plenty of it, so make sure you’ve eaten lots of olives!
