The first sustainable sailing guide in Lefkada!

Supported By: Ionian Environment Foundation

The crystal-clear waters of the Ionian continue to draw sailors to its characterful islands, calm coves and sparkling, sheltered bays. Lefkada, also known as the Emerald Island, is a growing hub for sailing. Thousands of tourists charter sailing boats to cruise the clear waters of this archipelago.

But despite what you might think, it is not all plain sailing – boats can cause damage to the unique marine biodiversity of these Natura protected areas. Aiming to harness the positive power of the sailing community, a landmark project was launched on World Ocean Day with a raft of charter companies in Lefkada to bring sustainability to the fore. A simple eye-catching Sustainable Sailing Guide is now found on all their sailing boats.

It provides practical and simple tips for sailors on how to avoid harming the beautiful marine environment when boating and how to do your bit with responsible practices on board and on shore. Sailors and crew are also encouraged to support conservation efforts by reporting sightings of dolphins and other endangered marine wildlife.

Hopefully everyone can enjoy sailing these stunning waters more sustainably – caring for the marine environment now and for generations to come.
