The Unique Book — Libraries of Kimolos
Supported By: Kimolos
Each island of the Cyclades, tiny or big, is special. Pristine beaches and picturesque cobblestone paths, traditional music festivals and gastronomy are some of the elements that bind them all together, making them an inseparable group with a unique heritage and a vibrant present. And then, there is one island that stands out for its connection with art and sustainability: Kimolos!
If, by any chance, this summer your road leads you in Kimolos you will encounter one of the library boats that adorn the island’s beaches. A sample of traditional craftsmanship that promotes the message of sustainability and the love of reading. On Kimolos, a number of traditional boats that are no longer used have been transformed into lending libraries hosting secondhand books. Hand-painted with environmental messages for the reduction of single-use plastics and marine protection, Kimolos’ boat libraries catch everyone’s eye and tempt them to pick up a book from their shelves.
Dedicated to protecting the marine environment of the Cyclades, “SeaChange”, an ongoing program of the Athanasios C. Laskaridis Charitable Foundation, supported the creation and maintenance of “boat-libraries” with the aim of sending a strong message for keeping our coasts clean. Through the program, the Foundation partners with “Kimolistes”, an active local volunteer group, to raise awareness on the need to protect the sea, through exhibitions, door-to-door visits, plastic free festivals and training sessions to island inhabitants.
