Tilos’ new energy
Supported By: Tilos
Stepping onto Tilos is like stepping back in time. Expect to be welcomed by the gentle sound of lapping waves and the smell of slow-roasted goat wafting through the salty air, on this slow-paced, secluded island nestled within the Dodecanese. But don’t be fooled. This island may have preserved its old-world charm, but its eco-innovation is paving the future.
Tilos has invested into its energy transformation, becoming the first island in the Mediterranean to be 100% energy self-sufficient, using solar and wind for energy. At the main port, electric vehicles hum past moored boats and solar panels power bus stop information boards. Landfill is no longer an issue, with more than 80% of Tilos’ rubbish being recycled.
Home to just 500 year-round residents, 400 species of flowers and herbs and numerous rare birds, the whole island is an ecological park, which now operates at the highest of green standards.
As well as beautiful beaches and tempting turquoise waters, Tilos has a rich history and geological past. Traces of Neolithic items and animal fossils have been found in Charkadio Cave and Tilos is the last place in Europe where wild elephants lived about 4,000 years ago!
Not to be missed is the ‘ghost town’ of Mikro Chorio, founded in the 15th century and abandoned in the 1950’s as inhabitants fled to nearby Livadia. Walk around the remains of stone houses and churches and go for a drink in the lively bar which has the best views in Tilos.
