Waves of change in Corfu

Supported By: Corfu

An almighty collaboration is taking place in Corfu. The island’s beautiful villas are joining together to form a pact for change. The Ionian Environment Foundation (IEF) has created the Villa Alliance, an initiative to ensure holiday villas minimise their impact on the magnificent island they call home.

“Waves for Change” is a new initiative in the development stages where villas can be awarded up to five “waves” for adjustments made to minimise environmental impact, in the fields of plastic reduction, composting, waste separation, water conservation and renewable energy. This means eco-minded travellers booking a villa can easily see which ones are making waves to minimise their impact.

The alliance will host events led by local experts to show villa managers, owners, gardeners and housekeepers how to take action. From sustainable villa design, marine conservation and flora and fauna data collection, to championing indigenous plants, composting and saving water, no stone will be left unturned.

The alliance hopes that over time the example set by the villas will seep down into the community, causing local businesses to follow suit, and thus see a whole shift across the island in mindset, attitude, behaviour and policy. Now this is a wave we want to ride!
