Wet and wild in Evros

Supported By: Evros Delta - Natura 2000 birds and biotope

When it comes to wetlands, the Evros Delta is the one.

The biggest in Greece and one of the most important ecosystems in Europe, it goes without saying that its protection is paramount. Biodiversity big dog Natura 2000 has taken the delta under its wing and now works hard to sustain the delta’s awesome biosphere.

Thousands of migrating birds stop to rest their weary wings, autumn sees fuchsia pink flamingos frolic in the shallow waters, sea eagles swoop through the balmy air, and glistening fish fill the nutrient-rich water. And it’s not hard to see why these magnificent mammals and varied vertebrates stop by – the delta has something for every animal, big or small – clear sparkling lagoons, glorious swampy marshes, cosy secluded reedbeds, lush forest bursting at the seams and an array of weird and wonderful plant species embellishing the ground.

Here, a plethora of sustainable initiatives are at play. The LIFE project keeps an eye on water, birds and biotopes, birds are ringed, wardens keep an eye out for any ne’er-do-wells compromising the environment and locals, kids and volunteers get their hands dirty with regular clean-up exhibitions.

Keen to visit this wonderful, wild oasis? Visitors are welcome, but you must work with nature and not against it. Birders and nature lovers can access the north-western part to marvel at the magical place or apply for a permit for other areas. Don’t forget your binoculars.
